The role of "deacon" is to lift from the shoulders of elders/pastors ministry needs that are considered to be critical to the health of the fellowship and help in supporting the priority ministry of elders/pastor - which is discipleship relationships centered upon the Word and prayer. Deacons support the church's mission by taking responsibility for matters related more to ministry activities and administrative tasks.

Now at this time, as the disciples were increasing in number, a complaint developed on the part of the Hellenistic Jews against the native Hebrews, because their widows were being overlooked in the daily serving of food.
