“I’m not goin’ to lie to you.”

That classic line will, for all times, be the first memory I recall of most conversations with one of my grandkids in the early adolescent season of life.

Refreshing. Intriguing. Arresting. Why? Because “truth” is such an alien virtue in our present culture that an introductory declaration of honesty seems almost a necessity.

When a candidate for a political office speaks, we write them off as simply making promises without intention of fulfillment. When a press secretary fields questions, the press insist on cross-examination simply because they suspect that the truth is buried somewhere under the spin. Because “trafficking in truth” is so foreign to our lives, we insist that witnesses place their hand on a Bible and “swear” to tell the truth.

“I’m not goin’ to lie to you!”

No “had my fingers crossed” escape routes.

No “but the situation changed when I didn’t expect it to” exit ramps.

David highlighted one of the outstanding marks of a true worshipper by stating, “He who walks blamelessly and does what is right and speaks truth in his heart …” —Psalm 15

Or Paul, “Therefore, having put away falsehood, let each one of you speak the truth with his neighbor.” —Ephesians 4

The mission of bringing hope to a hopeless world is greatly enhanced when those who follow Jesus “traffic in truth.” Or as Christ put it, “Let what you say be simply ‘Yes’ or ‘No.’” —Matthew 5

I’m not goin’ lie to you! The watching world will sit up and pay attention when Christians can be taken at their word.

See you Sunday, Church!
