101 Ways to Serve Manna would have been the #1 bestseller on their Amazon website. For breakfast. For lunch. For dinner. For bedtime snacks. Manna morning, noon, and night!

Ever notice how the “good old days” were so much better than the here-and-now days? How natural it is to romanticize what formerly was? Grandma’s house was SO much bigger and inviting…until you return years later to drive up the dusty lane to a tiny house cottage. Or those dream cars of the past…until you look for the A/C button and discover it is but an open window…which requires not pushing a button but turning a crank ☺. Or how “cool” we looked in our bell-bottoms and tie-die…until Dillards tries to outfit us in by-gone clothing that just makes us look like we are caught in a time warp. So THOSE are the “good old days?!” ☹

A “free lunch” program seemed like the dream of a lifetime. If He could do it once, could He pull it off again?

  • Jesus did it yesterday. Moses did it every day.
  • Jesus did it for 5,000. Moses did it for a nation.
  • Jesus did it once. Moses did it for forty years!

Those were the “good old days!” IF this local son-of-a-carpenter could pull THAT off, they would certainly make Him their king. They totally missed His point.

Later on Jesus would confront such crass materialism, their attraction to the health, wealth and prosperity gospel attraction with, “What will it profit a man if he gains the whole WORLD (vacation homes, sports cars in the garage, all-inclusive-resort vacations, bigger houses, fuller closets…) yet loses his own soul?” They thought that what was lacking was simply more material stuff. They believed that if they could find a leader who freely distributed stuff that the gnawing of their souls would be silenced. They heard Him declare, “I am the bread of life, whoever comes to me will never hunger and whoever believes in me will never thirst” John 6:35 So they, like the woman of compromised reputation at the well replied, “Sir, give us this bread ALWAYS!”

Manna toasted for breakfast. Manna sandwiches for lunch. Manna main entre for dinner. Manna just before going to bed. Three meals a day adds up to 1,095 meals per year. 43,800 meals over the forty-year journey. That’s a LOT of manna!

He had come from heaven to satisfy their hungering souls. And they would settle for a steady supply of daily bread. ☹ They longed for a comfortable Earthly Life. He had come to secure for them an Eternal Life!

Don’t be TOO critical of them. After all, what are YOU willing to settle for from Jesus?

“After this many of His disciples turned back and no longer walked with Him.” John 6:66

See you Sunday, Church!
