Acts 6:1-7

Got people? Got problems! #Leadership101

“And it came about the next day that Moses sat to judge the people, and the people stood about Moses from morning until evening” Exodus 18

On the other side of incredible victory/success/blessing will predictably come a season of struggle. Satan refuses to retire from the business of seeding discontent and disunity among the People of God. He did it in the Garden. He did it among the pilgrims of Israel. He did it in the early Church. He is doing it today!

Their experiences were nothing short of stunning!

  • 10 incomparable demonstrations of the power of God in a land of slavery
  • Dry-land deliverance through the heart of the Sea
  • Divine visitation on a mountain-top in the wilderness
  • Rivers of water from a rock
  • Bread on the lawn every single morning
  • Military conquest over seasoned and resourced forces

A legacy of graces and unbelievable affirmations of the power and presence of God filled their rear-view mirrors. But…Got people? Got problems! #Leadership101

It took the fresh perspective of a newly arriving guest to see the impossible scenario that was unfolding. With all the needs and challenges of organizing a gathering of people into a smooth operating nation, Moses was diverted from the most important things and distracted from the matters that would make the most lasting impact. His 18-hour workday was consumed by the necessary but exhausting task of mediating reconciliation between members, friends, and neighbors. After simply one day of observation, his father-in-law took his esteemed son-in-law aside and gave him some timeless leadership counsel. “What is this thing you are doing for the people? Why do you ALONE sit and all the people stand about YOU from morning to evening?” Exodus 18 Then, after hearing Moses’ feeble response, Jethro said, “The thing that you are doing is not good. You will surely wear out both yourself AND these people…”

Delegation of responsibilities is the secret to leadership longevity AND to congregational prosperity! God is His wisdom has determined that successful biblical leadership will be a “team sport” and to enable that He wisely provided multiple gifted people to every congregation He has established. But “delegation” is a fri¬ghtening thing if you are wired to be a “control freak” for entrusting others with leadership requires the loosening of ones grip on the many details. However, as Jethro so insightfully declared, “If you do this thing and God so commands you, then you will be able to endure and all these people also will go to their place in peace” Exodus 18:23 Got people? Got problems! #Leadership101

God’s solution? Wise delegation of responsibilities and the freedom discovered in doing ministry as a “team sport!”

See you Sunday, Church!
