John 6

The Lord often, in kindness and grace, allows us to “do without” so that we might learn again what it is that we cannot do without!

Like EVERY good parent, he wanted to reinforce the lessons his children had been taught in Sunday School that day. So as they drove toward home, my son asked his son, “So, Ian, what is the one thing man cannot live without?” Silence followed that question as my kindergarten-aged grandson stared out the car window.

“The one thing man cannot live without is ____________________!” What answer would you write in that blank?

  • A house to shelter us at night?
  • A cupboard full of food?
  • A good job that provides adequate resources for a comfortable lifestyle?
  • A vacation in a luxury resort or a secluded mountain cabin?
  • A security system that removes the anxiety of potential harm?
  • A good education to open doors of opportunity for years to come?
  • A happy and united family that brings peace to the holidays?
  • A ticket to the next Husker home game?
  • A trustworthy group of friends who would walk through hard times with you?
  • A good report from your doctor after your exam?

The list can stretch on and on. The items listed on YOUR list will most likely speak to the things that YOU find to be of non-negotiable value. It is our very nature to immediately default to the physical realities and tangibles.

The multitude with the freshly filled tummies on the picturesque hillside on the north shores of the Sea of Tiberias concluded that the one thing without which they could not live was a daily supply of bread. And if they could get it for free?! Priceless! (How very 2016 American of them! ☹)

But what IS it without which man cannot live?

“He humbled you and let you hunger and fed you with manna, which you did not know…that He might make you know that man does not live by bread alone!” Deuteronomy 8:3

The Lord often, in kindness and grace, allows us to “do without” so that we might learn again what it is that we cannot do without!

After several minutes of silently staring out the window, Ian ventured an answer to his Dad’s question: “Duck tape?” ☺

So…what is it that YOU cannot live without?

See you Sunday, Church! (We’ll provide the “bread” of the Word ☺)
