Purpose of Intern Program
Through the active recruiting of young men and women, the intern program is to challenge and unveil what regular day-to-day ministerial life is like and provide a full-time ministry experience grid to help the intern assess their own call and the possibility of expending their life for the sake of the gospel.

2 Timothy 2: 2; “and what you have heard from me in the presence of many witnesses entrust to faithful men who will be
able to teach others also.”

Benefits of Internship
1. To learn how to integrate the Word, life and ministry practice
2. To test character
3. To learn how ministry is about people and not programs
4. To help prepare for formal theological training
5. To learn how ministry is done in the ‘real’ world
6. To learn how ministry is to be multiplied
7. To learn evangelism

The Call to Ministry

There are two dimensions to a call to ministry:
1. The Inner Dimension which the individual senses where God is leading them.
2. The Outer Dimension which is the affirmation by church leaders through prayer and the observation of ministry work.

Internship is a time where both dimensions are given the opportunity to be explored and clarified.

3 Phases of Internship

1. Theological Formation Work
  • Weekly readings and discussions -
Assigned readings from the Scriptures and from theologically based books and articles.
  • Scripture memorization
2. Experiential Ministry
  • Ministry Observations and Assistance
  • A schedule will be given to spend time assisting staff and pastors in their respective ministries.
Included will be children’s ministry, youth, adult, college, family, FLOCKS, missions, worship,
First German church, office staff assistance, facilities, and support ministries.
  • As opportunities arise, accompany and assist pastors and staff with hospital visits, funerals,
weddings, visitation, mentoring, prayer meetings and counseling situations.
  • Sermon Preparation Observation
  • Elder Meeting Observation
  • Specialty Ministry Observation and Assistance -
Additional time of observation and work will be allotted for areas of particular interest and gifting.
3. Ministry Assessments
  • Public Teaching Observation - Opportunity to teach will be provided in a setting where tools of learning can be displayed. An assessment will be provided by observers. The setting may be either in a class setting, small group, or congregational.
  • Personal Development Plan and Ministry Assessment - Each intern will complete a Personal Development Plan and observers will fill out a ministry assessment for the purpose of personal growth and assessment of spiritual gifts.
  • Other Assessments - Periodic assessments and a final assessment will be given at the end of the time period to help the intern in future planning and understanding areas of strengths and weaknesses.
